The lift truck or forklift is a powered machinery used most frequently for the lifting and transporting of products and materials in warehouse and industrial environments. These types of equipment are normally utilized within the mining, construction, dockside and warehousing applications.

Depending on their functions, the forklift could be referred to a lot of different names. Some different examples of these names are: lift trucks, stacker trucks, trailer loaders and fork trucks. These equipment are used all around the world, mainly within the warehousing and manufacturing industry.

During the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the first forklifts made their debut in the construction of the Pennsylvania railroad during the year 1906. At that time, platform trucks were launched to help in moving goods. These first platform trucks run on batteries. The trucks regained their popularity in WWI when extreme labor shortages occurred due to all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts truly arrived on the market to stay.

For forklifts, there are basically 2 kinds: ones that handle light cargo and the ones which deal with heavier cargo. Lighter models would comprise: side loaders, towing tractors, hand pallet trucks and walkie starters. These equipment are made for handling lighter loads and they are not suitable for very heavy loads. The specific load capacity of the machinery is posted in the owner's handbook and on the machine itself. Some examples of the big truck types include: telescopic handlers, walkie order picking trucks and truck mounted forklifts.

On the market today, there are various kinds of forklifts available. Each could provide various load capacities. Most of the time in warehouse applications, the lighter units is used. Larger units are often seen within the shipping business. Some units have a tilting mast to make the load capable of bending in order to counteract any slipping.

Most forklift models with have rear steering wheels as this particular design aspect helps to increase the maneuverability of the machine. Additionally, this steering manner comes in very helpful when operating around corners. These machinery can be unstable due to their varying centers of gravity. It is a wise idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Specialized forklifts are yet another category. These equipment comprise articulated counterbalance trucks and explosion proof trucks. The explosion proof trucks are utilized in factories and settings that handle combustible materials.
