The cornerstone for SMAG was laid during 1937, when the Salzgitter Group purchased a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machinery. In 1986, the company bought the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the following years. At present, SMAG is the world's market leader, using grabs for agriculture, waste disposal, and global cargo handling applications.
