Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to run electric forklifts must be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety measures must be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is really vital to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothes from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post must be located near the charging place. The route to the post must not be blocked and a worker who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never permit things like for example matches or lighters to be utilized while an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be well ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
